YUN MOO KWAN

KONG SOO DO - KWON BUP

Yun Moo Kwan: ´School for Study of Martial Arts' was originally a Judo school, founded by Lee Kyung Sik in 1931. Chun Sang Sup, a black belt student of him, was asked by Lee to teach Kong Soo Do at the Yun Moo Kwan after his study in Japan. Yun Moo Kwan or 'School for the Study of Martial Arts' was after the Japanese occupation the second Kong Soo Do school in Korea, founded by Chun Sang Sup on March 3, 1946, who was a pupil of the Japanese Karate master Funakoshi (and Toyama Kanken). Chun invited two Korean Shudokan teachers, his friend Yoon Byung-In and Dr. Yoon Kwei Byung, who taught Kong Soo Do & Kwon Bup in the Yun Moo Kwan until the Korean War (1950). A unique combo at the time in Korea: this was not 'Taekwondo' what TKD-teachers often claim…

Hwang Kee (Soo Bahk Do Association).

Dr. Yoon Kwei Byung, student of Toyama Kanken (Japan) and Kenwa Mabuni (Japan), took over the Yun Moo Kwan (Korea) in 1953 under a new name: 지도관 (Ji Do Kwan). In particular, he taught Kong Soo Do, which gradually led to the disappearance of Kwon Bup. Jidokwan-Kong Soo Do became the largest school in South Korea and worked closely with Moo Duk Kwan conducted by Hwang Kee (Soo Bahk Do Association). In 1961, most Kwans merged into the new martial art of Taekwondo, but Dr. Yoon and Hwang Kee refused. Some of their students however did switch. Kong- or Tang Soo Do became less popular in Korea but continued to exist, as well as abroad, especially in the USA.

Een leerling van Dr. Yoon Kwei Byung: Sihak Henry Cho (U.S.A., New York), doceerde Kong Soo Do aan Adolph Lichtenstein (Aruba Korean Karate Insitute).

A student of Dr. Yoon Kwei Byung: Sihak Henry Cho (U.S.A., New York), taught Kong Soo Do to Adolph Lichtenstein (Aruba Korean Karate Insitute). His pupils L. Johnson and O. Sevinger brought it to the Netherlands (1974-1993). From them Rudi Klijnstra (founder YHA in 1993) learned the entire Kong Soo Do curriculum, but Kwon Bup was completely lost. After ten years of study, research including travels to China, he learned the full complementary Manchu Kwon Bup style from Yun Moo Kwan.

Note: Dutch Jidokwan-schools, which are Taekwondo examined, don´t  teach authentic Manchu Kwon Bup.
